The Library Map of the World (LMW) is an open-access platform maintained by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). It is one of the most comprehensive global sources of information about libraries, bringing together international library statistics, insights into the library sector, and inspiring stories showing how libraries contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Our vision is to strengthen global understanding of the essential role libraries play in learning, community well-being, and sustainable development.
Through shared information, data and stories, the Library Map of the World highlights how libraries drive positive change in their communities.
What are the goals of the Library Map of the World?
The Library Map of the World aims to:
- Increase awareness of the state of libraries worldwide;
- Communicate clear, comparable metrics that describe library service level in each country;
- Demonstrate how libraries improve people’s lives and support sustainable development;
- Provide countries with evidence to support library advocacy efforts;
- Build the credibility of libraries as partners for governments, decision-makers, and other stakeholders.
Where does the content come from?
All information and statistics on the Library Map of the World come from contributors in each country or territory. Dedicated volunteers – from national library associations, national libraries, library support organisations, and other institutions – work with IFLA to ensure that information is accurate and up to date.
SDG stories are submitted by individual libraries and library organisations around the world, and the core Library Map of the World team reviews and edits each one.
What can you find on the platform?
- Countries – a comprehensive overview of each country’s library landscape, including library and contextual data, key organisations, policies, legislation, education opportunities for librarians, and professional events.
- SDG Stories – a curated collection of impactful stories showing how libraries contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Data Lab – country-level library statistics across all library types worldwide.
Since its launch in 2017, the IFLA Library Map of the World has become a trusted reference for researchers, librarians, and decision makers working to understand and communicate the impact of libraries in their communities.
What do contributors say?
“Sharing information about our country and highlighting the best practices of our libraries and profession in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals is a great achievement and a source of inspiration for libraries and library professionals in our country. We hope that libraries will be able to show how they contribute to national and broader development strategies. We also hope this work can reach a higher level and be included in the Voluntary National Review, and thereby in the United Nations’ reporting, to demonstrate how libraries support the country’s development.” – Library Map of the World Contributor from the Asia-Oceania region
