Library Week / Bibliotēku nedēļa
The national library week, celebrated annually since 1997, usually takes place during third week of April. It is a tradition initiated by the Library Association of Latvia (LAL), which selects a different topic for each year and invites libraries to join the celebration around selected topic. Libraries across the country provide various events and activities during the week to raise an awareness of opportunities and value of libraries for their different communities. In 2017, the Library Week featured the contribution of libraries to the Sustainable Development Goals aiming at raising awareness among different stakeholders about the value and role of libraries in development of communities.
The Festival of Latvian Libraries / Latvijas Bibliotēku festivals
The event, organised annually by the Library Association of Latvia in close cooperation with the National Library of Latvia, usually takes place during the month of April, close to Library Week, and consists of three main parts: Conference of Latvia librarians (and the Congress of LAL members); Awards Ceremony (the Library of the Year, the Librarian of the Year, etc.), and the Market of Ideas (an interactive exhibition aimed at peer sharing and learning).
Round table discussion of Latvian libraries / Latvijas bibliotēku apaļā galda diskusijas
The National Library of Latvia every year organises Round Table Discussions for Latvian academic, special and public library directors, managers and specialists. The annual event takes place in the first quarter of the year, and is focused on discussion of previous year's achievements and challenges, exchange of ideas and experience as well as defining next years priorities. After the event, the National Library prepares a summary paper which serves as an annual repport of Latvian library field.
This national regular event organised by all public and privte book sector actors together takes place on 3-4 days around the UNESCO book day (23rd of April). All interested libraries can join it.
It is celebrated on the 6th June each year by libraries and librarians in Malaysia. The objective of celebrating Librarian Day is to give recognition to the library profession and its contribution to the library development in Malaysia.
Annual Conference of Libraries in Malaysia
Annual Conference of Libraries in Malaysia is held annually, usually in the month of May, and jointly organised by National Library of Malaysia and the Librarians Association of Malaysia. It is a three-day Conference and is open to all librarians in Malaysia. Among the objectives of the conference are as a platform for discussion pertaining to reading habits among Malaysia and to enhance the role of the library to achieve the National Reading Decade 2030. The conference comprises of Keynote Address, Plenary Sessions, Workshops and Lightning Talks.
Conference of Universities and National Library of Malaysia (PERPUN)
Conference of Universities and National Library of Malaysia (PERPUN) is held twice a year and the chairman is the Director General of the National Library of Malaysia. The members of PERPUN consists of Chief Librarians from 20 government public universities, 5 government link company universities and the National Library. The objectives of PERPUN is to discuss various issues of common interest and also to establish electronic library network between university libraries, current information services, subscription of databases and publications document delivery services.
International Conference on Libraries (ICOL) (Universiti Sains Malaysia)
International Conference on Libraries (ICOL) is a once-every-two-years opportunity that provides platform for participants and presenters to access the best information, discover new ideas and network with people in the profession. The objectives is providing a platform for information sharing, expertise, experience and professionalism through paper presentations and research finding; fostering the strategic networks, promote cooperation and exchange of experiences in the field of librarianship.
International Conference on Libraries, Information and Society (ICoLIS) (Universiti Malaya)
The aim of the International Conference on Libraries, Information and Society (ICoLIS) is to bring together the Library & Information Science (LIS) professionals to exchange and share new ideas, experiences, and research. The main objectives are: to provide opportunities for sharing and discussion of the current status, innovations, trends, research, directions, solutions, issues and challenges adopted in the fields of LIS; to explore ways and reality-based scenarios in developing new models in library and information services; and to examine issues related to consolidating technology, information resources, knowledge and skills into strategic competencies in order to strengthen the role of libraries and information in servicing the community.
Readathon is a reading activity being organized by Education Library Service within the Directorate of Namibia Library and Archives Service. The main goal of the event is to instil the culture of reading in children while they are young. The main target of the event are learners in Primary and Secondary levels. The main event is being celebrated nationally on the last Friday of September every year.
Library Day, August 31st (Bhadra 15)
Since 2008, the Library Day is celebrated nationwide to attract attention of the general public, the Government officials and academia. Each year, with a specific different slogan, activities are carried out all over the country.
The Library Day is organized by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) forming different subcommittees to act and make this event a grand success. All libraries around the country celebrate the day accordingly. It is observed for a week and on the last day (the main day) a grand program is organized in the Capital City Kathmandu. A morning procession of librarians, Government personnel, students, library lovers with placards and banners in hand are displayed and the procession is converged into a closing ceremony in a big auditorium where the minister for Education and other eminent personalities in this field deliver speeches. Prizes and awards to the best librarian, best library worker, best library and the best reader are conferred.
National Library Congress
This annual event is organised by the National Library of the Netherlands, KB. Each year a theme is chosen around with the knowledge and practices are shared in an effort to further the development of libraries.
